How to take care of your skin during menopause

Updated: Oct 31, 2023

Menopause often brings many hormonal changes for women aged 45-55 years old. These natural changes often lead to physical changes in the skin such as hot flushes, night sweats and skin irritation. Others can experience more severe effects such as signs of acne, wrinkles and especially thinning of the skin which is a result of the body producing less collagen. This can damage skin elasticity and cause sagging under the eyes and around the cheeks. It is important to take care of your skin in this period to retain its firmness and glowing complexion. Here are some tips to keep your skin looking fresh and youthful all year round.

Protect yourself from sun damage and age spots

Menopause is the time where women see the physical effects of years of sun damage on their skin. This can be in the form of age spots or areas of darker skin across their face, neck and arms. It is highly recommended to wear an SPF (of 30 or higher) when going outdoors. This will help to fade the appearance of age spots and reduce the chances of skin cancer. It is suggested that seeking help from a dermatologist is beneficial too. They can perform skin examinations to help with age spots, dryness and blemish. Depending on your problem, professional help will be tailored to your skin type and is often more effective than buying drugstore products.

Practice a good skin routine

During menopause, your skin can become quite dehydrated. This is due to oestrogen levels decreasing, leaving the skin appearing dull-looking and tired. It is highly recommended to invest in a good cleanser to clear your pores and protect your skin from formations of acne and spots. ARLENE SOOTHING FACE WASH gently works in removing these impurities and pollution from the surface of the skin. It contains chamomile and oat lipid oil which soothe the skin and protect it from inflammation and breakouts. Following this, moisturising regularly is important too. It ensures skin hydration for optimising skin plumpness and a glowing complexion. Serums and moisturisers containing hyaluronic acid are recognised to be the most effective because of their high water retention. This leaves skin looking refreshed by reducing the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles.

Dealing with new facial hair

The natural changes in female hormones can lead to unwanted hair under the chin, jawline and by your lips. Seeking help from your dermatologist is beneficial, as they can provide a prescription-based hair removal cream and other options too. Laser surgery is a popular route for many as well.

Dealing with skin irritation and itchiness

The lack of collagen and natural oils can leave menopausal skin feeling itchy and sore. Apart from seeing your doctor, there are many home remedies to repair the skin. Vitamin C works in revitalising the skin's appearance and can be taken as an oral supplement and in foods. ARLENE SKIN ENHANCING FACE SERUM contains Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Vitamin E protects skin cells from environmental damage, including UV rays and pollutants which trigger the early signs of ageing. ARLENE MARULA FACIAL OIL contains these ingredients too. Packed full of vitamins and essential amino acids, the Marula oil works in renewing and revitalising skin cells. It is absorbed easily by the skin’s barrier, reducing trans-epidermal water loss and improving conditioning of the skin. This gives the appearance of the skin a natural and warm glow.
